CATHOLICISM Preview: Purgatory - Why Would Anyone Go Through This?! (from Episode 10)
Peter
Denizens of Hell... If there are any?
Is it really an acceptable theory in the Catholic faith that there aren't any denizens in Hell?
Sounds quite a bit like universal salvation...

according to this definiton of denizon --if there are any -- implies the demons are not there either: den·i·zen /ˈdɛnəzən/ Show Spelled[den-uh-zuhn] Show IPA noun 1. an inhabitant; resident. 2. a person who regularly frequents a place; habitué: the denizens of a local bar. 3. British . an alien admitted to residence and to certain rights of citizenship in a country. 4. anything adapted to a new place, condition, etc., as an animal or plant not indigenous to a place but successfully naturalized.

Fr. Barron said "... if there are any..." in hell, referring to people. Please keep it in context. The Catholic Church teaches that, because we cannot know what is in anyone's heart, we cannot know with certainty that any particular person is in hell - only God makes that judgement. Consequently, we cannot know how many people are in hell ("if any"). But please understand, the Church does believe Jesus when he preaches about those who do not inherit the Kingdom of God and about the wide road to perdition, etc.

To submit onself to purgartory is to pass judgement on oneself and try to make it right with God. Time spent in silence, fast and prayer always open us up to a better relationship with God.

Our Lady told us to pray after each decade of the rosary, "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy." She would never instruct us to ask God for something impossible. Thus, hell could be empty. Love demands that we hope even Lucifer will come to repentance.

Caught only a small portion of today's lesson on EWTN regarding sin (especially pornography) and how we should look to our closest loved ones and "not need" them because of "objectivity" and how that is not the way to follow Christ. I wish I could view the entire lesson. Could you tell me how to find this lesson that was shown on EWTN at approx 5 or 6 pm CST on Jan 19, 2012. Thank you, Bill

I don't believe hell is empty. After all, Our Lady of Fatima told the children that many souls go to hell. Lucifer has worked too hard, and still is, to fill it with lost souls and I don't think HE will EVER repent and be saved. We need to pray constantly to keep present and future souls from ending up there... so that, at the last moment, they will repent and accept God's infinite mercy

I am hoping that Fr Barron will himself, fully explain his comment: "...denizens of hell, if there are any?” at minutes 2:00-2:04 of the video “A Preview of Episode X: The Last Things”. This is very confusing and stirs uneasiness in me about Fr Barron and the Catholicism Project itself. I have signed up to be an Ambassador of the Catholicism Project and have dutifully promoted the Catholicism Project and Fr Barron himself. I would also like to purchase the entire DVD collection for my home, with hopes that this will inspire my children to continue in the faith throughout adolescence and young adulthood when one’s mind and soul can be stirred many different ways. That being said, I am selective about the materials I bring into the home and prefer them to be inspiring and doctrinally correct but not confusing to the average person, who may not have extensive theological training and understanding. Although I have certainly been a great fan of Fr Barron, there have been a few comments I have come by here and there, made by Fr Barron (such as this one) that have left me confused. This is the first time I have asked for clarification. I refer to the comment made by “Vivienne” on 1/22/2012 at 3:41PM. The Church has authenticated the apparitions at Fatima and its messages. Can Fr Barron please address his comments in light of this and other information that the Church propagates on hell and its inhabitants? Although there are some interesting interpretations by others written in this Comment Section, we can never really know what someone was thinking when they carefully chose their words. I need to have an exact and thorough understanding of what idea Fr Barron is suggesting when he utters these 7 words. I need this to continue to have confidence in Fr Barron and in this well-produced series. Thank you.

Marilyn: The existence of hell is one of the Four Last Things, i.e. Death, Judgement, Heaven or Hell and I'm 1000% certain that Fr Barron is not teaching that heaven is empty. No true, orthodox Catholic priest or layman believes that Hell is empty. Jesus taught in the existence of hell. It's a non starter for me. He's just trying to make a distinction that we cannot assume that a specific person is in hell..only God can judge where people will wind up in for eternity, heaven or hell.
For reference, the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire." The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs. (CCC 1035)
Bottom line: People go to hell..Father Barron says we just don't know who.
God bless!

Thank you Arthur C. I did refer to the Catechism as I have a copy at home. I just wanted clarification from Fr Barron himself, as he is the one who chose the words. I do appreciate your interpretation of his comment and thank you for taking the time to address mine. God bless you too!
